Technical Evaluation

I learnt so many new techniques in this unit, from realistic wounds to more abstract pieces. I learnt that you first sculpt the shape you want in clay, on a non-porous try, then create a barrier to stop leakage. You then spray that with fixing spray, followed by Petrolease, making sure to stand by a window for both. Measure equal amounts of silicone A and B, using different gloves and sticks for both. Mix the silicone mixture well, avoiding bubbles, then pout it over the clay sculpture. Once the silicone is set, remove it from the clay and wipe the mould with isopropyl alcohol. Mix together a ratio of 1 Baldiez : 2 alcohol and mix well, avoiding air bubbles. Spray the mould with Petrolease and once dry, apply two layers of the Baldiez mixture with a brush, letting them dry in-between. Mix together equal amounts of silicone A and B, then add about 60% of Deadener, depending on how soft you want your piece. Add pigments if necessary, then pour into the mould, scraping off the excess with a flat ruler. Once this is set, remove it using a brush and talc. 

I also learned how to apply a bald cap, by first making the hair as flat as possible with gel and water and then pulling the bald cap over the head, with the model holding the front. Next, making sure all the hair is covered, start cutting round the bald cap to fit the head and ears; ask the model to lean her head forwards when cutting the back. Apply spirit gum to the head and the bald cap round the edges, then when it is tacky, smooth down the edges. Smooth and blend the edges with acetone and cotton buds and then colour as necessary.
