Looking into Human Bite Marks

Human bites are usually left on the skin after an assault, usually a sexual assault. Different pressures can be used when biting the skin, meaning the teeth marks can either just leave indents in the skin or they can pierce the skin and draw blood. Below are three types of bite marks; the first one look like the teeth pierced the skin, drawing blood, but it looks like it has started healing.

The bite mark below look reasonably fresh, there is no blood coming out but it look like there would have been when it had just been done and the wound is still very red and raw looking. The teeth marks have indented the skin, showing each individual tooth mark. There is some bruising starting through the middle and round the teeth slightly, meaning that the bite either caused immediate bleeding under the skin or that the bite has had several days to start bruising. Only the front teeth have shown up as marks on the skin, however they are spaced quite far apart, meaning that the biter would have taken a very large bite.

This bite mark, below, looks older and more severe than the top one. The dark bruising suggests that it is about 2-5 days old and that it's beginning to heal itself. The emphasis of the bite is on the top teeth, where it looks like all the teeth have broken the skin and made it bleed. It looks like the skin was bitten really hard and then the teeth were pulled/dragged backwards to create the sharp front edges and elongated, smudged looking backs of the teeth. The middle of the bite is slightly red, suggesting that the skin was being sucked on slightly, making the blood come to the surface. It looks like there were other injuries in the image below, that will not be included in my recreation.

The human bite mark below hasn't drawn any blood, but the marks left on the skin look very sharp and defined. Each individual tooth is clearly shown and there is clear swelling round the edge of each tooth which emphasises them. It looks like the teeth have pinched the skin because there is a light coloured line in most teeth, suggesting that these parts hadn't been pushed down. The bite looks very fresh, as no bruising has started appearing, however there is still swelling. I really like how detailed these teeth marks are and will make sure that there is detail and depth in my final teeth mark design.

Creating my Own Bite Marks

I decided to ask one of my friends to bite into his arm and hold it there for about 30 seconds because I wanted to see a human bite in person. I was really happy with how it came out. I was surprised that the top and bottom teeth marks were so close together, almost making an oval shape. I would have thought that they would have had a gap between the upper and lower set of teeth. The middle of the bite does not look swollen or red, meaning that the skin wasn't being sucked on at all. The deeper the teeth went into the skin, the more red that part of skin went. The bottom set of teeth pierced the skin deeper and more concentrated, whereas the top set of the teeth look like they have been dragged backwards slightly because of the length of teeth marks. No blood was drawn in this example because I didn't want to hurt my model, however I would consider using blood for my final bite mark design.
